Steve Montanino is a USSF Grade 4 Referee and is currently the only national referee from Western New York. In his first year as a national referee, Steve was awarded two international assignments as well as games in the US Open Cup and multiple games with the USL. Steve’s was an assistant referee for USA MNT U17 v. Brazil U17 at the Nike Friendlies in 2008, 4th official for the USA WNT v. Canada friendly in Rochester, referee for the US Open Cup 2nd round match between Cleveland and Rochester and an assistant referee for the US Open Cup 3rd round match between Columbus and Rochester.

Steve has traveled all over Region I and even cross country a couple of times for his assignments. He has refereed in the 2008 USASA National Cup Finals in Seattle, the2008 USASA Region I National Cups in Pennsylvania, the 2008 USASA U-23 Region I National Cups in New Jersey, USASA Region I Select on three occasions, the 2009 RDSL League Cup and multiple matches in the NPSL, PDL, W-League, RDSL, GSSL and the Champions League.

Not only has Steve succeeded and moved up the ranks as a USSF national referee, he is also giving back to the other referees (and potential referees) in his area. Steve serves as a mentor in the local amateur league (Rochester District Soccer League) and also at the state level for referees aspiring to work top USASA and USL matches in Western New York. He also served as the lead instructor and referee coach at a clinic organized for new referees in New York and was certifi ed as an associate referee instructor in 2009. Steve was responsible for the WNY “STOP” (Safety, Think, game Over, call Police) document outlining a clear and simple procedure for referees who are the victim of referee assault, too.
